Is the Google Maps API paid?

Google Maps Platform is billed based on usage: each API and feature (SKU) has a price per request, and Google provides a certain amount of free usage every month. A Google Cloud billing account is required for billing. Without key restrictions and quota limits, cost can grow uncontrolled.

Why do I get a "REQUEST_DENIED" error?

The most common causes are: the relevant API is not enabled on the project, billing is not linked, or the key restriction does not cover the domain making the request. Enabling the API in the Google Cloud console and checking key restrictions usually solves the problem.

How do I limit my bill?

A daily quota per API, a budget alert, and key restrictions should be used together. Using a session token for address autocomplete also lowers cost.
